Palabras clave: Matico, plantas medicinales, experiencia comunitaria  ABSTRACT:  A field study was done in order to better understand the community experience regarding the use of the medicinal plant called “Matico” in the city of Ambato. We designed a transverse study which has been developed in every neighborhood of the county of Ambato. The tool that was used to collect the information was a survey that allowed the collection of any information linked to the use of this medicinal plant and other actions that can be detrimental for the health in urban and in rural communities. It has been a well structured survey in order to collect general information about the interviewed people and further details about the specific use of the “Matico” and knowledge that local people had about that plant. The interviews have been made by students of the fifth and sixth level of the career of Medicine. They have been advised by researchers. After analysis of the results we concluded that: the medical properties of the “Matico” are quite well known by the local population. Basically they have passed the knowledge about the plant’s properties through the families, where health professionals used to not recommend this plant. The plant is in most of the case used for healing, as an anti inflammatory, and as an analgesic. It is mostly taken in oral form or topically on the skin and in mucus, administered twice a day in decoction or infusion for a period of 4 to 7 days, starting generally the second day of treatment. The frequency of the side effects was low and there is a relationship between traditional uses and scientific experiments.  Keywords: matico, medicinal plant, community experience
