Sumario:The objetive of the research was to make a study of the tourist potential for sustainable development in rural areas of Pedernales Canton. The research was literature, descriptive field, which developed in the rural parishes of the canton Pedernales. A methodological procedure was divided into three stages: situational analysis of rural parishes of the canton Pedernales, market assessment of the tourism potential of rural areas and developing strategies to promote development of rural tourism. At diagnosis, political, environmental, geographic, economic and tourist information Pedernales rural parishes of the canton was characterized. Subsequently tourism resources were characterized by the application of data collection sheets and on the methodological reference secondary sources of research in the sector. The market evaluation possible to determine the supply and demand as well as the determination of the potential applying a Strategic SWOT matrix. For structuring strategies are used as the basis development plans PLANDETUR 2020 and the National Plan of Good Living 2013-2017 by an expert consultation strategies are determined by the proposition eight and twelve programs such tourist projects . The investigation showed that the canton Pedernales has a variety of tourist resources found mainly in the rural area and has potential that if harnessed and developed could become one of the main rural tourism products in the region and the country.
