Samenvatting:Urban expansion and the decrease in vegetation has intensified the generation of heat islands worldwide, so the present study aimed to evaluate the importance of urban vegetation in mitigating heat islands in the central area in Rocafuerte city. The research was carried out in three stages: the first consisted of the characterization of the vegetation of the urban area and the compilation of Landast 8 satellite images for the calculation of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). In the second stage, the earth's surface temperature and the intensity of the heat island were calculated using the QGis 3.28.5 software and representative maps were prepared. In the third stage, the earth's surface temperature and NDVI were correlated using the IBM Statistics SPSS program. It was determined that in the urban area of Rocafuerte in the period studied there is a decreasing density of vegetation with very low NDVI values. While the neighborhoods most affected by the intensity of the heat island are Eloy Alfaro, Los Pinos and María Isabel, highlighting through this study the importance of urban vegetation in the mitigation of heat islands, because areas were identified where the health of the vegetation is low because the temperature and intensity of the heat is higher, so it is important to address the problem through an efficient management model.
