Descripción
Summary:This research was aimed at identifying the risk factors (e.g. physical, biological, chemical, ergonomic and psychosocial) affecting occupational health status of staff members at the soil testing laboratory in the agriculture and livestock Department of the escuela superior politécnica agropecuaria de Manabí University. Surveys, interviews, observation guides and a three-step test were used to evaluate the existing risks. Through the results, which were based on a review of the literature, laws, regulations and the OHSAS 18000 quality standard (concerning occupational health and safety of the staff), various anomalies were detected in relation to occupational health and safety at the laboratory. Occupational safety was found to be inefficient. Risk factors at five areas of the laboratory were identified. The qualitative estimate showed moderate risks reaching a score of 118, suggesting a low probability of occurrence or seriousness of potential harm. The significant risk obtained a score of 141, suggesting a medium-value significance of probability of occurrence or seriousness of potential harm; and intolerable risk reaching 44, posing a very harmful probability of occurrence or seriousness of potential harm at the laboratory. Based on the obtained results, an occupational health and safety plan is proposed for the staff members at the Soil Testing Laboratory in the Agriculture and Livestock Department of the escuela superior politécnica agropecuaria de Manabí university.
