Crynodeb:Globally, bees, pollinating insects and food producers (honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, etc.) are declining at an alarming rate. In Latin America, meliponas constitute a guild of pollinators and honey products that have received little attention despite their vital importance as pollinators of native species and producers of high-quality honey and competitive prices in the national and international market. The objectives of the present are to stimulate the development of local meliponiculture through the design of a standard box that allows the rural and urban population to manage these species properly. In this way, while promoting the breeding of these vital species in their pollinating role, in clear numerical decline, it is intended to promote the development of economic alternatives in the rural areas of Manabí, Ecuador. For this, the biology of the species Melipona aff. rufiventris from hives taken from nature was studied. The first harvest of the standard boxes gave a production of 400 ml of honey and four pots of pollen in the pechiche box and 650 ml and 6 pots of pollen in the laurel box. The latter was the one with the highest yield in honey production. The data obtained show the breeding and management of the species Melipona aff. rufiventris as a valid and sustainable socio-economic alternative for the rural communities of Manabí, while this activity will guarantee the conservation of the species and the environmental services that it provides.
