Summary:The main objective of this research is to determine the optimum percentage of carob meal for feed, considering its digestibility and in vivo metabolism in broiler chickens in the initial stage. A granulometry, fat and soluble protein analysis was carried out on carob meal; for the determination of in vivo digestibility, the technique of soluble protein analysis in 0.2% KOH solution was used on broiler feces for 7 consecutive days. Carob meal analysis resulted in 13.89 g of protein, 3.28 g of fat, negative toxicity and 98.8 g as granulometry value. As a result, it was found that treatment 1 (25% H.A-75% corn) had a lower percentage of protein from the chickens compared to treatment 2 (50% H.A-50% corn) and treatment 3 (75% H.A-25% corn). On the other hand, the control, which was treatment 4 (100% corn) had a lower percentage of protein excreted by the chickens compared to the other treatments. The different combinations of carob meal and corn, when compared to the control, didn’t show significant differences. In addition, the process used showed good results, since the meal didn’t present toxic substances. In conclusion, it was evidenced that the metabolism with carob meal in broiler chickens in its first stage in the first and second day was minimal and in the following days the absorption was determinant to demonstrate that carob meal in percentages less than or equal to 25% is a functional food to be considered as feed.
