Shrnutí:Milk production is an important part of the local economy in the coastal region of Ecuador. Within this sector, there is an interest in improving the genetic traits of cattle to increase milk production and quality. As a result, several studies have characterized specific genes such as the CSN2 gene, which encodes β-casein and whose variants (A1 and A2) may have possible implications for human health. This research aimed to determine the allelic and genotypic frequencies of the A1 and A2 variants of the CSN2 gene in a cattle population, and to analyze the effect of these genotypes on the protein and fat percentages in the milk. Biological samples were collected from 92 cows; blood was drawn from all the animals, and milk was collected from those in production. The blood samples were used for DNA analysis, for which DNA was extracted and alleles of the CSN2 gene were discriminated using Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). Based on the results, genotypic frequencies were calculated as 4.65% for A1A1, 25.58% for A1A2, and 69.77% for A2A2 respectfully, Allelic frequencies in the population were also calculated, with 17.44% for the A1 allele and 82.56% for the A2 allele. Finally, no statistically significant differences (P>0.05) were found in the protein and fat percentages of the milk produced by cows with the A1A1, A1A2, and A2A2 genotypes.
