Description
Summary:Canine demodicosis, caused by Demodex spp., is a chronic dermatopathy that is difficult to manage. The objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of Vallesia glabra leaf extract in reducing skin lesions in dogs with confirmed infestation. A completely randomized design with repeated measures and unbalanced structure (CRD) was implemented, considering 16 dogs distributed into three groups: T0 (Amitraz 10%), T1 (V. glabra 20%), and T2 (V. glabra 30%). The anatomical locations of the lesions constituted measurement subunits, totaling 33 records. Clinical evaluation was performed by quantifying lesion reduction and assessing the degree of symptomatic severity (alopecia, erythema, pruritus, and crusting). The results show that T2 consistently reduces lesion severity, with significant decreases in pruritus, erythema, and alopecia in most of the evaluated locations. The reported lesion reduction was: T0 = 55.22%, T1 = 60.61%, T2 = 63.00%, with no significant differences between treatments (p = 0.27). Lesion location did not influence the response, indicating that the observed variability depends mainly on individual factors of the dogs. In conclusion, Vallesia glabra extract at 30% shows a consistent adjuvant effect in reducing dermatological lesions, although the clinical response is heterogeneous among individuals.
