Description
Summary:The main objective of the research was to test the effectiveness of foliar applications of zinc on the efficient use of nitrogen and yield in hard yellow corn. The research was carried out during the rainy season of 2019 at El Palmar site in Junín canton, Manabí. The treatments evaluated were 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1 + foliar Zn, a treatment without N but with foliar application of Zn and a control treatment with omission of N and Zn. A randomized complete block design (DBCA) with five treatments and four repetitions was used. The main variables recorded were grain yield (kg ha-1) and agronomic efficiency of N (AEN). The results showed that nitrogen fertilization supplemented with foliar Zn significantly influenced (p<0.05) the grain yield, where the dose of 200 kg of N ha-1 reached the highest yield with 7024.88 kg of grains ha-1. Zinc foliar application can increase yield by up to 22%. The highest AEN was achieved with 100 kg of N ha-1, so from the agronomic and environmental point of view it would be the recommended dose for the study area using medium-yield cultivars. However, up to 200 kg of N ha-1 could be applied in high-yield cultivars.
