Description
Summary:The presence of gastrointestinal parasites is a significant concern for both canine and public health. This study aimed to characterize gastrointestinal parasites in dogs treated at two veterinary clinics in Calceta city, Ecuador. A total of 100 fecal samples were collected and processed using the flotation coprological technique, then examined under a microscope. Data were recorded in Microsoft Excel and analyzed with InfoStat software, including the Chi-square test to assess associations. Results showed that 53% of the dogs tested positive for gastrointestinal parasites. The most prevalent species identified were Haemonchus spp. (14%), followed by mucus balls with cercariae (13%) and Alaria spp. (12%). Regarding associated factors, dogs kept in yard environments and those with mixed feeding had the highest prevalence rates. Additionally, sex was not found to influence parasite prevalence (p > 0.99). These findings suggest that proper deworming and rotating antiparasitic treatments are essential practices to effectively reduce gastrointestinal parasite rates.
