description The identification and evaluation of elite cocoa trees constitutes a basis for the development of materials with production characteristics, adaptability and outstanding quality; taking advantage of the high genetic variability that allows improving the arable supply at the local and national level. Given this need, the main objective was raised: to phenotypically characterize six hybrid families of Theobroma cacao established in the experimental Campus "La Teodomira", obtained from crosses between National Type and Trinitarian genotypes, previously studied, from which those trees with high productive potential were selected. In each family, the phenotypic characteristics of the entire plant, as well as the leaves, flowers and fruits were evaluated with the help of morphological descriptors. In addition, the average production in the evaluation periods was recorded. The data was arranged in an Excel matrix, and the interpretation was made through descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis to determine the relationship between variables and genotypes, and the phenotypic similarity between families. Among the characteristics of the families that stood out with the analysis of main components, it was determined that 16 descriptors obtained a high variability grouped into two components with more than 60% variability in the families. However, the families (F1 and F5) were considered the genotypes with the greatest attributes for the identification and selection of promising trees that represent a viable alternative to improve production in cocoa orchards in the Manabí area.
