Summary:In order to evaluate the level of contamination of swine semen, identify the bacteria that produce it and assess its effects on seminal quality; We evaluated 20 semen samples (10 fresh and 10 diluted) of two pigs of Landrace x Pietrain and Duroc genotypes, used as reproducers in the pig herd of the Faculty of Livestock of the Agricultural Polytechnic Superior School of Manabi. A completely randomized block design was used, with a bifactorial treatment arrangement, to study the variables: agglutination, motility and pH, as well as the presence and quantity of bacterial colonies in the semen. No statistical differences were found for the agglutination and motility variables, whose averages were found within the normal range. Neither in the amount of colony forming units (9.6X106 and 1.1X107 cfu / ml) for fresh and diluted semen respectively. However, they exceeded the established normal ranges. The presence of E. coli was determined in 11 (51.0%) of the 20 samples analyzed. The variable pH reported statistical differences (P <0.01) between the types of semen evaluated and the averages obtained were 9 and 8.55 for the fresh and diluted semen respectively. The correlation between the agglutination and the percentage of semen motility was negative, so that hygiene deficiencies are deduced during the collection and manipulation process in the laboratory, which means to maximize the biosecurity measures in the whole process.
