description The vigorous growth of seedlings in the nursery is an aspect of vital importance to promote adequate adaptation and survival in the definitive field. The objective of the research is to evaluate the effect of Trichoderma spp and biochar on cocoa seedlings under nursery conditions. Two separate experiments were performed. In the first, 11 strains of Trichoderma spp were evaluated on the early growth of cocoa seedlings. In the second, factorial treatments of three strains of Trichoderma (strain 1, strain 2 and strain 3) and three types of biochar (rice, cocoa and carob) were evaluated. In both experiments, the main variables recorded were root length (RL), plant dry weight (PSW) and leaf area (AF). Data were analyzed through ANOVA and separation of means with Tukey's test α = 0.05. In the first experiment, the resultsreported significant differences (p<0.05) for the evaluated variables, where the strains of Trichoderma EM-33, EM-30 and EM-150 achieved the greatest increases in growth of cocoa plants, in relation to the other strains tested. In the second experiment, the analysis of variance detected significant statistical differences (p<0.05) for the evaluated variables, where in all cases the treatments based on combinations of rice, cocoa and carob biochar, with the EM-30 strains, EM-33 and EM-150 increased the growth of cocoa seedlings, compared to the control treatment that reached the lowest growth averages. It is concluded that the combination of biochar and the Trichoderma EM-30, EM-33 and EM-150 strains can be used to enhance the growth of cocoa seedlings in the nursery.
