Descripció
Sumari:The objective of this work was to determine the potential of the small owl (Athene cunicularia) as a biological pest controller on the ESPAM “MFL” campus and its surroundings. A total of 50 pellets were collected in the mouth of the nest. The analysis by the wet method showed that the species predates a wide diversity of prey species characterized in four large groups: Arthropoda, Reptilia, Aves and Mammalia. The majority percentage was skewed toward the Arthropodos with special predilection (81.4%) of the Orthoptera order, followed by the order Hymenoptera (10.2%) and Coleoptera (5.5%), as well as the Rodentia order (2,9%); a daily average of 9 individuals of the order Orthoptera was obtained, which means an approximate predation of 7000 insects of this order consumed annually by a single pair of Athene cunicularia, values that multiply in the breeding season considering that this species reaches 3 to 6 chicks under favorable conditions. Confirming that the small owl (Athene cunicularia) is an excellent biological controller especially for the agricultural and urban area.
