Summary:The following research aims to evaluate the environmental liabilities on the water resource caused by anthropogenic activities in the lower sub-basin of the Carrizal river Bolívar canton). The aspects and impacts associated with the liabilities were established through a route along the riverbed, applying an identification card and contrasting with a survey. 4 liabilities were identified: 2 banana plantations, one of inorganic origin (B.C 1) and another of organic origin (B.C 2), a rainy water station (EA) and a gray water discharge (AG), showing that 60% of the survey respondents are not aware of its presence and affectation. Subsequently, the liabilities were valued using an importance matrix from which three were obtained with a moderate-non-critical valuation (B.C 1; B.C 2 and AG) and one irrelevant-non-critical (EA). Two samples were taken per passive for the respective physical-chemical analyzes (pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, BOD5 and COD) and microbiological (fecal and total coliforms), obtaining that total and fecal coliforms exceed the Ecuadorian regulations in all the identified liabilities and the electrical conductivity only exceeds the rainwater effluent passive in Station 1, while the rest of the parameters are within the established limits. To mitigate the effect of liabilities, four measures were proposed (one for each liability) focused on reducing water pollution —the main recognized environmental impact— and it was concluded that the four environmental liabilities are generated by discharges of effluents from anthropogenic activities.
