Yhteenveto: | The levels of mercury concentration in water and sediment of the La Esperanza reservoir were evaluated. Five sampling points were established, located in the sites Bejuco (1), Carrizal (2), Dos Bocas (3), Membrillo (4) and in the center of the reservoir (5). For the determination of mercury in the La Esperanza reservoir, the atomic absorption spectrometry method for the generation of hydrides was used in the surface water sample and sediments. The results were compared with the current environmental legislation and the Canadian Environmental Quality Guidelines. According to the analysis, the mercury concentration in the surface water sample in the month of August was between the values of 0.032 to 0.117 mg/l, and in the month of October of 0.077 to 0.137 mg/l, these values exceed the limits permissible maximums established by the Ecuadorian environmental legislation for water for human consumption and domestic use (0.006 mg/l) and for water for agricultural use (0.001 mg/l). In sediments the concentration of mercury in August was between 0.232 to 0.256 mg/kg and in October from 0.203 to 0.232 mg/kg, which exceeds the maximum permissible limits of the Canadian International Standard Quality Guidelines (ISQG) for sediments (0,17 mg/kg), and according to the Probable Effect Level (PEL) concentrations of this cause occasional biological effects. The concentrations of mercury in the five sampling points allowed to conclude that Hg contamination exists in the La Esperanza reservoir. |
