Gaia:The objective of this research project is to analyze the determinants of efficiency in credit unions from Segment 1 of the financial sector in the Sierra region of Ecuador during the 2019-2022 period. This study employed a quantitative, applied, and synchronic approach, using analytical and historical-comparative methods. Techniques such as literature review, financial analysis, and the application of financial indicators were utilized to evaluate the efficiency and profitability of these credit unions. The sample consisted of 37 credit unions, selected for their relevance in the region. In the first phase, a characterization of the services offered by the credit unions was conducted, revealing a diverse range of offerings, though limited in investment products and digital technology adoption. In the second phase, financial efficiency was assessed using the CAMEL model, concluding that risk management and the lack of digitalization negatively affected outcomes. Finally, profitability and operational efficiency were examined, with recommendations for product diversification, the adoption of emerging technologies, and the optimization of operational processes to enhance the competitiveness and sustainability of the credit unions in the post-pandemic context.
