description The digital transformation has changed the way in which information is produced and consumed, leading journalists of digital media in Imbabura to perform new routines when covering a news story. Based on the literature review, it is recognized that there is a journalistic evolution in recent years that have influenced the experience in newspapers. In order to carry out this research, the way in which an event is covered was analyzed from three phases: before, during and after the journalistic routine. Within this analysis we used basic research, followed by a mixed approach. The professionals who belong to the 'Colegio de Periodistas de Imbabura' were our main population. With them, data was collected through a survey in order to discover what are the main changes. In addition, information was collected through interviews of those communicators from different areas to get different perspectives on the process of coverage. The results of the research lead us mainly to the challenges that journalists are currently facing with the immediacy of information on digital platforms, as well as the new work structures that make the profile of the journalist have a readjustment. In the same way, in Imbabura there is a journalistic work with ups and downs due to the presence of professionals who are not journalism professionals.
