Tóm tắt:Since colonial times, the Isthmus of Panama has been the subject of study and admiration for its geopolitical importance. European countries, such as France, fought to build a canal. But it was not until the United States gained independence from Panama that the famous Panama Canal was built. From its opening until the end of the 20th century, the Americans controlled it, until Panama regained control. Its annual revenue from the passage of ships can reach and exceed 2.5 billion dollars (Panama Canal Authority, 2024). It is undoubtedly one of the most important contributors to the GDP of the country of origin. However, due to climate change and its consequent weather phenomenon, El Niño, there has been a major drought since 2023 that has reduced the level of the lakes that cross the canal. As a consequence, the Panama Canal Authority (governing body) has taken measures and restrictions on the crossing, which has led to a ‘bottleneck’ of ships waiting to cross between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and vice versa. The objective of this paper is to analyse the consequences of the restrictions imposed by the impact of the weather phenomenon on Ecuador's foreign trade.
