Se trata de recorrer la trayectoria de un encuentro intelectual entre un hombre y un mundo. Certeau descubrió este mundo en otoño de 1966, cuando la revista jesuita francesa Études lo envió a Río de Janeiro para seguir los trabajos de la Confederación Latinoamericana de Religiosos (CLAR)[1] . La experiencia fue tan impactante que al año siguiente regresó a Brasil, pero también a Chile, Venezuela y Argentina, y en 1968 solicitó a sus superiores que lo enviaran en misión a Brasil. Estos se negaron, pero las estancias de Certeau al otro lado del Atlántico se multiplicaron durante la década de 1970[2] . El encuentro con América Latina acompañó así la segunda parte de su trayectoria intelectual, durante la cual, tras formarse primero con el padre de Lubac y luego en la Escuela Práctica de Altos Estudios, en el seminario del filólogo e historiador Jean Orcibal, se convirtió en un intelectual comprometido con el campo de las ciencias humanas. Lejos de ser una dimensión más de su obra, la experiencia de América Latina desempeñó un papel esencial para Certeau. Longe de ser mais uma dimensão de sua obra, a experiência da América Latina desempenhou um papel essencial para Certeau.
