Su funcionamiento requiere una infraestructura informática que ha ido creciendo durante las últimas décadas. En paralelo, el cambio climático se cierne sobre el futuro del planeta como una amenaza inquietante, que demanda una respuesta social y política. La percepción generalizada sobre la tecnología considera que su impacto medioambiental es escaso. Este trabajo discute esa percepción, completando para ello una revisión bibliográfica acerca de los efectos negativos que tiene la producción, el consumo y los residuos tecnológicos sobre el medio ambiente en que se desarrollan nuestras sociedades, una cuestión que ha recibido escasa atención hasta la fecha desde la Academia.A sociedade da informação se constrói sobre uma importante base tecnológica. Seu funcionamento requer uma infraestrutura informática que mantém uma taxa constante de crescimento durante as últimas décadas. Paralelamente, as mudanças climáticas surgem no futuro do planeta como uma ameaça perturbadora, que exige uma resposta social e política. A percepção generalizada sobre a tecnologia considera que o impacto ambiental é escasso.
