Systematics of the species of Muhlenbergia (Poaceae: Chloridoideae) from South America

A monographic study of the South American native species of the genus Muhlenbergia is presented, based on the study of specimens deposited in 77 herbaria. Achoimre:A monographic study of the South American native species of the genus Muhlenbergia is presented, based on the study of specimens deposited in 77 herbaria. Different aspects related to the classification, nomenclature, morphological variations, phylogeny, and biogeography are discussed. Muhlenbergia is represented in South America by 32 native species and one hybrid [Muhlenbergia coerulea (Griseb.) Mez × M. rigida (Kunth) Kunth], of which 12 are endemic. Muhlenbergia microsperma (DC.) Kunth is cited for the first time for Brazil. Muhlenbergia circinata Kuntze is reduced to the synonymy of Muhlenbergia torreyi (Kunth) Hitchc. ex Bush. Muhlenbergia nigra Hitchc. and M. tenuissima (J. Presl) Kunth are excluded from the South American flora. Three species were determined in the category CR, 8 in EN, 5 in VU, 3 in NT, 12 in (LC, here the hybrid is included), and one species was categorized as EX (M. inaequalis Soderstr.). Identification keys, descriptions, synonyms, illustrations, geographical distribution, and some morphological and ecological observations are also provided for all taxa.
