الملخص:The study area is located in Tungurahua volcano in Baños County, Tungurahua Province. The volcano is a cone ranging from 2000 m elevation at its base up to 5016 mal the summit It comprises five life zones and is located approximately at 78027-W and 01°27-S We applied 50 x 2 m transects in six localities at various altitudes for studying species heigher than 50 m height. At 3200 m elevation we applied 10 transects of 50 x 2 m for studying species with ai least 2.5 cm DBH. The transects were named A. B. C. D. E. F. and G We collected at least two duplicates by number We identified the material at herbaria in Quito. With abundance data we calculated Simpson's D iversity Index and Sorensen's Similarity Index 91 Atprcfot Botánico} de Tunptrahua In the six transects located between 2340 and 3650 m elevation, we found 64 and 173 individuals corresponding to 19 and 40 species. From the six transects, five are rather diverse, while the last, located at 2900 m, had a lower diversity The most representative species are: N ip h id iu m crassifo liu m , Viburnum h alli, G aiadendron punctatum, Siphocampylus affinis, Blechnum sprucei, Chusquea lechmanii, Thelypteris rudis, Pteris horizontalis, Disterigma empetrifolium, D. a cu m in a ta , B le chn um lo x e n s e and Escallonia m yrtilloides. Based on the Similarity Index, the transects located at 2430 and 2460 m (A-B) and those located at 3400 to 3650 m (E-F), had the highest similarity with 14 and 8 shared species. In the transect at 3100 m, we found 200 individuals with at least 2.5 cm DBH belonging to 36 species, the most abundant being Palicourea anethystina (Rubiaceae), Piper andreanum (Piperaceae), Chusquea lechmannii (Poaceae) and Miconia bracteolata(Melastomataceae). The Diversity Index for the 36 species was 13.6, which means the transects were moderately diverse. In conclusion, vegetation at the Tungurahua volcano is highly variable due to the shape of the cone. It has high divesrity and it provides a good opportunity to study changes in vegetation at a range of altitudes from the base to the summit of the volcano. Traducción: Alina Freire-Fierro
