Summary:This article focuses on what is currently the most outstanding issue for Ecuadorian foreign policy, namely, the growing violence of the transborder conflict. By using the approach of so-called "peace studies': the author makes a critical review of the conceptual and ethical assumptions on which the Ecuadorian foreign policy is based. It is argued that the colombian conflict can be seen as a contemporary form of war, one which would lead the Ecuadorian State to become directly involved. This involvement will likely derive from the ethical imperatives related to the preservation of human security for both the domestic population and the displaced Colombians.
