Riassunto:The construction of the peri-urban territory in Ecuador has been the result of the accelerated process of urbanization that has placed the peripheries as living and comfort spaces in the face of the chaos experienced in the city. In these spaces the conflict between a traditionally rural sector and new urban sector endures, as a product of capitalist modernization. Based upon participant observation, Calderón and Cumbayá are analyzed as cases with similar historical processes but with distant results, especially in the differentiation of social classes and appropriation of public spaces. Calderon, for instance, stands out for its commercial and trade fair conditions, whilst Cumbayá is intended for high-class projects and shopping malls.
