description The primary objective of the following study is to identify protective and risk factors present in the family systems of children between 6 and 11 years of age attending José María Velasco Ibarra School. This investigation based on the Systemic Family Theory of Salvador Minuchin, focusing on family structure and subsystems. It was a  case study of 25 families. Evaluative instruments used include a checklist of protective and risk factors and two questionnaires, one sociodemographic and one related to the perception of family function. Results indicate notable risk factors in the sample studied. These included mono-parental families undergoing changes in the developmental life cycle (32%), risky relationships associated with psychosocial problems such as intra-family violence and alcohol consumption (76%), and the impact of cultural machismo. The most significant protective factors were the existence of important family rituals (80%), a power hierarchy within the family (76%), and a sense of belonging (60%). Such results reveal a need to create family and community intervention plansbased on social support networks that will contribute to these children´s integral development
