According to the Hodrick-Prescott filter, one of the most popular approaches to extracting the cyclical component of GDP, actual GDP was 2.7% below potential output, i.e., a gap of 2.7%. |

En esta línea, la metodología del PIB potencial resulta relevante por al menos dos razones. En primer lugar, porque permite estimar la capacidad de crecimiento del país haciendo abstracción de la situación del ciclo económico y, segundo, porque permite precisamente inferir la posición actual de la economía dentro del último. Después de analizar un conjunto de nueve modelos con fundamentos estadísticos y económicos, se determina que a 2002 el PIB efectivo estaría todavía por dehajo de su nivel potencial con estimaciones variables del valor de la brecha del producto según cual sea el método seleccionado.
