總結:Currently, Ecuador faces great challenges to improve its competitiveness not only due to trade liberalization but also to the accelerated technological transformation of production processes. Ecuador should negotiate canned tuna within the Free Trade Agreement with the United States, because although it is one of the most exported products, it does not enjoy tariff preferences. The present work studies how changes in prices and incomes affect the commercial flows of Ecuadorian canned tuna. It also analyzes its degree of substitution with respect to its main competitors. For this, a long-term export demand function for Ecuadorian canned tuna has been estimated. For this analysis, panel econometric data techniques were used, with quarterly data corresponding to the period 1996-2003. The estimation results show that the Ecuadorian demand for canned tuna exports is inelastic because the estimated price elasticity indicates that the exported quantities increase or decrease by a percentage less than the price changes. Furthermore, the estimated income elasticity suggests that canned tuna is a luxury commodity. Despite these results, the "small country" hypothesis is not rejected, therefore, the trade policies adopted by Ecuador may not affect international prices.
