The situation of these types of societies can be understood as a game played between a leader, who has to decide the distribution of the aggregate income, and a group of citizens who have the opportunity to revolt 1f they are unhappy with the distribution. Coordinated action by citizens is possible because they form nodes in a communication network. However, communication through the network is distorted, which could preclude the emergence of collective action among citizens. The network structure and the distortion level are determinants of the political equilibrium and wealth distribution. The model explains how the dictator could use propaganda, cooptation, and repression to increase his expected utility. Finally, the model is illustrated by applying it to cases in Nigeria and Zaire/Congo. |

En una sociedad compuesta por un dictador y los ciudadanos, ¿cuáles son los determinantes del equilibrio político? ¿Cuáles son las condiciones bajo las cuales un levantamiento ciudadano tiene éxito? ¿Qué tipos de estrategias emplean los gobiernos para prevenir tales levantamientos? La situación en este tipo de sociedades puede ser vista como un juego en el que participan un líder y un grupo de ciudadanos. El líder debe determinar la distribución del ingreso agregado mientras que el grupo de ciudadanos tiene la oportunidad de protestar si se sienten descontentos con la distribución otorgada. La acción coordinada de los individuos es posible ya que forman nodos dentro de una red de comunicación. La comunicación en la red, sin embargo, es distorsionada y podría evitar el surgimiento de acción colectiva. La estructura de la red y el nivel de distorsión determinan, por tanto, el equilibrio político y la distribución de riqueza.
