In this analysis two categories, the structure of political opportunity (EOP) and the policy of influence, helped to identify how this group participated in the institutional sphere, within the context of crisis and political violence that Colombia faced in the 1980s. This investigation reviewed specialized literature and press news; some Afro-descendant leaders were interviewed as well. Thus, this study defined the historic outline of MSA’s political participation and also identified the group’s repertories of collective action. From the above, this paper defined MSA demands for identity, economic development and land titling within article 55 of the 1991 Constitution. Se recurrió a dos categorías conceptuales para el análisis: la estructura de oportunidad política (EOP) y la política de la influencia, para identificar cómo se generó la apertura para la participación de este movimiento en la esfera institucional, en el contexto de crisis y violencia política que enfrentaba Colombia en la década de 1980. Para esta investigación se acudió a literatura especializada, se entrevistó a líderes afrodescendientes y se rastreó noticias de prensa. Así, se reconstruyó históricamente la participación política del MSA en escenarios institucionales y se identificaron sus formas de acción colectiva. A partir de lo anterior, fue posible definir sus demandas de identidad, desarrollo económico y titulación del territorio en el artículo transitorio 55 de la Constitución de 1991.
