Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la forma en que se instalan los debates en torno a la agricultura familiar enla Argentinaen los últimos años y en particular sobre la necesidad de cuantificar y caracterizar al sector. El interés por conceptualizarla está presente tanto en el ámbito académico-científico, como en el técnico-operativo y también político. El artículo intenta mostrar la heterogeneidad espacial y la diversidad de actores de la agricultura familiar y su relación con su cuantificación. Para ello realizará una breve comparación entre la región más rica de la argentina (la región pampeana) y una de las regiones más pobres (el noroeste argentino). En relación a ello, se abordará los resultados del RENAF (Registro Nacional dela Agricultura Familiar) en la provincia de Santiago del Estero a los efectos de caracterizar al sector y presentar ciertas líneas metodológicas tendientes a una mejor conceptualización.
