Description
Summary:The COVID-19 pandemic brought a series of challenges to daily life, with effects on the food supply chain and its main food providers, family farmers. This article aims to understand the effects on family farmers’ markets in the south of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul State and its impacts on the dynamics of the food supply in which they are involved, as well as in their health and income. This is an exploratory research, which analyzes qualitative and quantitative data and has mapped family farmers markets in five large regions of the southernmost state of Brazil, out of a total of 119 municipalities. Altogether, 152 experiences were identified, encompassing the work of 2,747 families. Most markets remained active during the pandemic, varying in terms of safety measures. The study identifies the resilience of farmers, their ability to mobilize consumers, as well as the role of governmental and non-governmental organizations in the reconstruction of agrifood systems, highlighting different dynamics according to the studied regions. The research contributes with an unprecedented mapping of the location of family farmers' direct markets in the south of Brazil.
