Five perspectives about the growth of violence in Ecuador

The surprising increase in violence in Ecuador constitutes a gloomy and complex panorama to understand. Despite the multiple causes attributed to this phenomenon, it is still a pending task to approach the origin of this problem. This article proposes five interpretive perspectives to understand the reasons why this sudden and incremental wave of homicides and murders was unleashed in the mentioned country between 2008 and 2023. To answer the main questions that arise around this explosive growth this article will combine qualitative analysis methods that incorporate factors related to the criminal conflict, the war on drugs, the institutional weakness of the State, the criminal ecosystems and the snowball effect. These explanatory theses do not constitute finished theories, but rather interpretative perspectives on the subject of organized crime in Ecuador, which is presented as a multifactorial and integral problem.
