The former and future president: Donald Trump’s return to power, some elements of his election seen from Latin America

Donald John Trump is the second politician in the history of the United States of America to win the presidency in two non-consecutive elections. He was the forty-fifth president between 2017 and 2021, and is about to assume the Oval Office again as the forty-seventh in January 2025, until 2029. The victory of the Republican candidate was comfortable, with 312 electoral college votes, compared to the 226 obtained by his Democratic challenger, acting Vice President Kamala Harris. Although at the popular vote level the difference was smaller (1.7 percentage points or 2.5 million votes), the seven swing states, in which there were 93 electoral college votes in dispute, were ultimately painted red. With an analysis of geographical, demographic, and socioeconomic dimensions, in which key aspects of the campaign are accentuated, such as the economy, sexual and reproductive rights, and immigration, the electoral support obtained by the former and future president of the most powerful democracy is better understood. This is valuable in outlining perspectives on what this political turn may bring for Latin America.
