Zusammenfassung:The post-truth era has been accompanied by profound sociopolitical transformations. Among the most significant transformations have included issues surrounding disinformation. As a recent phenomenon, understanding post-truth requires a conceptual approach to its reception. In this case, the media have responded through verification processes, drawing on deontology tools. This gives rise to the following question: How does the citizenry engage with this issue? To address this, we propose an approach based on two premises. The first refers to verification as a practice carried out by organized political entities, which does not necessarily involve the citizenry in its everyday lives. The second considers fact-checking as a space of the citizens where they confront disinformation. This article is based on quantitative research that was randomized. It examines the public’s knowledge, perceptions, and practices related to fact-checking in Costa Rica. It is concluded that while awareness of fact-checking is limited, the practice itself is present. It functions as an active process, allowing for potential segmentation. Media literacy efforts should place greater emphasis on fact-checking as a space for the citizenry that is distinct from the verification conducted by the media.
