El libro, sin embargo, por su enfoque, desborda el episodio local, aportando sugerentes reflexiones sobre las actitudes políticas del campesinado indígena, la frágil constitución del Estado republicano y el papel que ha jugado el mismo en la construcción de las identidades/alteridades étnicas y locales. La autora quiere demostrar, entre otras cosas, que los campesinos de Huanta no fueron espectadores indiferentes o “carne de cañón” en las numerosas contiendas que siguieron al inicio de la República.
