Since the 1970s, there has been concern among academics, governments and non-governmental organisations about the need to reduce the use of fossil fuels and associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The tourism sector is not exempt from these challenges, and for this reason, this paper aims to analyse the situation of tourism in the context of energy transition, in order to identify the challenges for its decarbonisation. In order to achieve this, this exploratory-descriptive study is based on secondary sources of information from specialised literature, statistical and regulatory documents. The results show that academic-scientific studies have gradually increased in recent years, detecting socio-cultural, economic-financial, political-regulatory, technical and environmental challenges that each of the components of the tourism sector must face for a transition to a low-carbon economy. However, it is necessary to deepen the analyses from holistic approaches that critically address energy appropriation in the tourism sector. |

Desde la década de los 70 del siglo pasado, se evidencia una preocupación entre los académicos, los Estados y las organizaciones no gubernamentales acerca de la necesidad de disminuir el uso de fuentes fósiles y las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) asociadas a este. El sector turístico no queda exento de esos retos, por tal motivo, en el presente trabajo se propone como objetivo analizar la situación del turismo en el contexto de transición energética, en pos de identificar los desafíos que se presentan para su descarbonización. El estudio, de carácter exploratorio-descriptivo, se apoya en fuentes secundarias de información provenientes de bibliografía especializada, documentos estadísticos y normativos. Los resultados arrojan que los estudios académicos-científicos se han incrementado paulatinamente en los últimos años, y se detectan desafíos socioculturales, económico-financieros, político-normativos, técnicos y ambientales, a los que cada uno de los componentes del sector turístico debe enfrentarse para una transición hacia una economía baja en carbono.
