| Sumario: | Introduction: It is common today to find problems of malocclusion in adolescents, also considered as a public health problem, facial aesthetics, and functionality. Objective: To determine the prevalence of malocclusion and the necessity for orthodontic treatment and its psychosocial impact on dental aesthetics in adolescents from the northeast part of Quito city. Materials and Methods: The sample was of 203 students between 14 and 18 years old. A psychometric instrument was used, the Psychosocial Impact Questionnaire of Dental Aesthetics (PIDAQ) and a clinical examination was performed using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Results: A PIDAQ of 31.73 equivalent to a low impact was obtained. When comparing the results of the DAI and the levels of impact, no difference was presented in comparison with the sex, nor with the age obtaining for p = 0.211 and p = 0.399, respectively. The prevalence of malocclusion was 37.90% with a DAI of 25.34. Conclusions: There is an average association of low impact between the psychosocial impact and the severity of the malocclusion. |
