Copal ¿Un pueblo fantasma? Religosidad y comunidad re-desterritorializada: http://repositorio.ulvr.edu.ec/handle/44000/3640

The analysis of the relationship between religiosity and the formation of re-reterritorialized communities has already a crucial position in migration studies worldwide. However, in Ecuador, the issue is just beginning to gain importance. This study analyzes the link between the religious practices of the community Copal, a rural parish of Mendez City in the province of Morona Santiago, and people who migrated to other regions of Ecuador or countries like the United States and Spain. It was used a qualitative methodology based on an anthropological and sociological approach, which included regular visits to Copal to apply participant observation of religious practices of the community, and in-depth interviews with emigrants and their family members. Among the main findings, it is possible to emphasize that it has been formed a strong re-reterritorialized community that is strengthened by the participation of emigrants in traditional religious activities and economic collaboration for activities such as the reformation of the church building, “Father Albino Curto” road maintenance, and the Grotto of the Virgin. The community action-pressure through its Autonomous Decentralized Government and sense of belonging constructed through the reproduction of the traditions in the destination of migrants are also fundamental in the construction of the re-reterritorialized community.
