Yhteenveto:Food production is currently a matter of concern for politicians, business people and researchers, due to the increase in world population and the decrease in the productive capacity of soils, caused by unsustainable management. Rice is one of the most consumed foods in the world, so increasing its yield in a sustainable way is an urgent need. The objective of the research was to evaluate the application of cover planting in a Cuban agricultural production unit as an ecological alternative to increase rice yields. A randomized block design with three replications was established; rice straw was used as a cover crop in the experimental plot versus the traditional form of cultivation, in which no cover crop is used. For the processing of the data collected, an analysis of variance and the comparison of means by Student's t-test with a probability of error of 5% were carried out. Morphological indicators (plant height, number of leaves and number of progeny) and agro-productive indicators (m3 of water consumed per hectare, yield, weight of 1000 grains, number of grains per panicle and number of panicles per m2) were evaluated. The results showed that higher yields and lower water consumption were obtained in the treatment where the vegetative cover was used.
