Achoimre:This research focused on the current state of the solid waste management at The Escuela Superior Politécnica Agropecuaria de Manabí Manuel Félix López University, with an emphasis on the nonhazardous solid waste management for laying the basis for the creation of a guideline. We began with in situ observations to develop a baseline of the current state of the solid waste management (SW). We characterized the generated solid wastes by weighing and separating the components, and by calculating density and physical composition of the SW. We carried out interviews to lecturers, students, administrative staff and service personnel, which served to establish the basis for optimum environmental strategies in treating the nonhazardous solid wastes. We used a feasibility analysis matrix for evaluating environmental aspects, economic feasibility, education, social participation, operativeness and aesthetics, which served to implement a combination of strategies as a key tool in our guideline. We concluded that The ESPAM MFL University did not have a solid-waste classification system, considering that the areas with most SW generation are the cafeterias and classrooms.
