| Samenvatting: | Santa Rosa de Chillo Jijón was a spinning mill located near Quito that was engaged in both industrial activities and farming. In the midst of labor disputes that unleashed strikes and protests, the spinning mill’s managers and executive officers attempted to control its labor force by applying principles arising from Catholic movements for social justice and the thinking of Jacinto Jijón, its owner. After examining letters, speeches, newspapers, and the latter’s ideology, the article reconstructs how workers organized themselves and the clashes that took place in this workplace. |
