Tóm tắt:The present article explores the careers of three young Granadians in Ecuador between 1857 and 1862. By examining their activities in the political turmoil of the mid-nineteenth century, the article highlights identities shared by the intellectuals of both countries and suggests that their had common reactions to the clashes. Those scholars took refuge in forms of enlightened social interactions, tempered their course, and promoted projects that gave legitimacy to their identity as elite proponents of reason and culture. That is how they asserted their role as the heirs and advocates of the Enlightenment, to recommend peaceful solutions to disputes and serve as mentors to grassroots sectors of the population.
