Description
Summary:This essay deals with the theme of the novel El hombre de las ruinas, leyenda fundada en sucesos verdaderos acaecidos en el terremoto de 1868 by Francisco Javier Salazar, published in 1869. This neglected work of Ecuadorian literature on the Ibarra earthquake is studied as the first fantasy novel, with a romantic-gothic aesthetic, published in the form of a booklet. It also discusses what underlies its structure at the symbolic level: the presence of a strong Christian vision that reflects the idea of being in a liminal place where there would be a tension between mythological entities that is resolved with the finishing of one of them. From this the discursive level is considered, understanding the novel as an allegory of the spirit of the time, where Ecuador is perceived to have been destroyed by the classes with a prevailing colonial mentality and which prevent the establishment of a national project.
