Durante las demarcaciones de límites en el siglo XVIII, el contrabando en las áreas de frontera suscitó diversos conflictos entre autoridades españolas y portuguesas. No obstante, el comercio ilegal desempeñaba un papel importante en el abastecimiento de tales áreas, posibilitando así el establecimiento de alianzas locales.
