要約:This study investigates the process of solving mathematical problems involving decimal numbers in Chilean sixth grade students. The research underlines the importance of mathematical skills for everyday life and how the school stage is crucial in their development. Mathematics, as well as quantitative literacy, are necessary for integration into society, however, the ability to solve problems with decimals presents difficulties, both because of the inherent complexity of mathematics and the lack of adequate educational resources. In this sense, using a qualitative, descriptive methodology, the study addresses the specific procedural factors that influence problem solving, such as the understanding of the statement, identifying the problem, visualizing the context, exploring strategies, the execution of algorithms and the evaluation of results. Through a case study of six students, the application of a diagnostic assessment and semi-structured interviews, common difficulties faced by students, such as reading comprehension problems and the tendency to focus solely on numerical manipulation without fully understanding the context of the problem, are explored.
