Descripció
Sumari:The article reconstructs the political scenario in which the monument to the Virgin of Quito was installed on El Panecillo and unveils the contradictions this involved for the actors who took part in its conception and subsequent legitimization. The sculpture’s semantics is analyzed based on the values associated with masculine standards and the anti-communist ritual, two factors of the discursive support by way of the authoritative voices of archbishops, mayors, and heads of State which promoted the placing of such a statue. In addition, a discussion of the dissident voices who resisted this discourse in the context of the Cold War and in defense of their own identities is offered.
