El mapa topográfico del Ecuador. Sierra centro-norte, 1930-1940. Lugar y momento de una obra maestra cartográfica (Debates)

Between 1930 and 1940, the Military Geographic Institute created the first Topographic Map of Ecuador (MTE). At the time, this was a unique project in South America due to its representation scale (1/25,000) and a cartographic monument due to the technical quality of the developed planchettes and the field information collected. In the context of political instability in Ecuador during those years, this article analyzes the Map as an expression of the particular vision of the Ecuadorian military on the State’s capacity to “rationalize the exercise of power” and orient it to the “progressive development of civilization”, since the analysis of the geographic reality was part of the construction of the modern nation.
