Samenvatting:This paper aims to analyze the role of ideology in the process of economic integration in the Andean region. The main argument is that the empirical evidence shows that ideology has been present in the region’s debates from the very beginning of the integration process in the late 1960s. Based on what is understood by ideology in the debates of International Political Economy, this paper analyzes the various ideological debates in several periods throughout 50 years and the extent to which those debates have influenced on the advances and setbacks of Andean integration. The final section examines to what extent ideological homogeneity or heterogeneity can be considered as important variables to evaluate the development of the Andean integration.
