Description
Summary:This paper aims to present an overview of paradiplomacy and its processes in Ecuador and China in recent decades. It is necessary to give a context to the development of this practice in subnational politics, together with the positive scope, limitations and challenges that are found in each region in particular. Furthermore, it seeks to exemplify the political, economic, social, and cultural benefits that promote paradiplomacy as a regular way of conducting international relations between subnational governments, especially between distant central governments, both geographically and ideologically. Finally, it showcases the relationship between Ecuador and China, and briefly addresses the benefits that Ecuadorian subnational governments could obtain from the rise of their Chinese counterparts in the Asian political and economic sphere. Chinese paradiplomacy is found to present an opportunity for its Ecuadorian counterparts to be part of a global and regional economic and political network that is being generated around major Chinese economic zones.
